Q. Trying to plumb a new insulated garbage disposal. I'm stumped by a problem. The height of the sewer drain in the wall is 13" from the deck of the cabinet. The discharge on the disposal is 13.5" from the deck. How much lower does the sewer drain have to be in order to accommodate for the p-trap? Can I use this disposal or will I have to try to find one that will sit higher up? Any help anyone can provide would be great.

A. Anything lower than the output of the unit is fine ! A new P trap kit always is lower on the end that goes into waste pipe. 5" is more than enough.

Q. A beer bottle cap fell into my garbage disposal yesterday and is rattling around. I can't afford a plumber, what do I do? This would be a good time to mention that I'm not comfortable sticking my hand in. . .after seeing a horror movie where a garbage disposal ground a character's hand down to a nub.

A. You could also look under the sink and un-plug the disposal, just a thought. After that, reach in and get the bottle cap. Of course if you're still queasy about that, try a magnet, BBQ tongs, 2 spoons.

Q. The side if the sink by the garbage disposal is draining slow. Will it ruin my garbage disposal unit if i put some Drano into that side of the sink? the house is only 5 years old, and i have tried putting egg shells, small bones, and ice down it to break it loose. That was reccomended by a garbage disposal repairman, but it didn't work. any suggestions would be great. Also I really don't feel like taking it all apart, or hiring a plumber. thanks there is nothing wrong with the disposal unit. the sink on that side is draining slow.

A. Sorry, but you are either going to have to take it appart or call someone to do it.

Q. I have never installed a garbage disposal, the plumber said it would take him about 20 minutes to do it, so i figure with my in experience it might take me 2 hrs. what exact tools will i need to do this job? I think i may need some large adjustable pliers. or channell locks which i will have to go purchase.

A. Rather than read all the replies, just type in, "How to Install a Garbage Disposal" and you'll get several tutorials to follow and even a video or two.

Q. Is it hard to install a new garbage disposal? plumber wanted to charge me over $100.00 to install? it is apparently frozen up, house was vacant for over a year

A. NOPE ...JUST UNHOOK POWER DISCONNECT PIPE AND THEN UNHOOK DISPOSAL AND INSTALL REVERSE ORDER 15 MINUTE PROJECT....FIRST TRY A DISPOSAL WRENCH OR ALLEN WRENCH ON THE BOTTOM OF THE DISPOSAL FIRST UNPLUG POWER CORD THEN TRY TO TURN DISPOSAL MAKE TAKE SOME FORCE WORK SOME WATER IN THERE

Q. The drain appears to work fine. It just seems that when I first turn on the garbage disposal it sends a gyser up through the other sink drain. I have checked to see that the plumbing is done right as well, though I don't see any problems there.

A. The drain needs cleaning and you can do it without removing any piping. Heat up some water and carefully pour it down the drain without the disposal after you have also poured down 1 cup of white vinegar and 1/2 cup of baking soda. Link us @ Homelinepros.com.

Q. The garbage disposal side of my kitchen sink is not draining. Is it ok to pour a clog-clearing product like Drano in it? Or is there some garbage disposal safe product I can use? I just don't want to have to call a plumber if all it is is a clog.

A. I wouldn't put Draino down it. Start by filling your garbage disposal side of the sink with a few inches of water. Then turn the disposal on and see if it will flush itself out. You might try this several times. You can then try a plunger. If that doesn't work you should remove the drain pipe that goes from the disposal to where it joins the drain of the other sink - it is probably plugged up. Get a bucket under there ahead of time. You can clean that out by pushing everything through with a screwdriver or something. Reassemble everything and try it again. Q. I had an old 1/2hp garbage disposal that died, so I went out and bought another one for $199. It's a 3/4hp one. The plumber is installing it now for $250.00. He says that this one is bigger and so some of the plubming needs to be adjusted. Still seems to high. It is what it is, but I'm wondering if I being ripped off :) Thanks.

A. I been a plumber for a long time over 30year. i have never change a person that kind of a placeto put a garbage disposal in, for a hour of work. the most is150 to do the job. all you got is take the line off remove the elec. and drpe the pump. then put the new one on hook-up. they see you coming .
